Literacy Preschools

Family literacy preschools are tied to Mt. Diablo Adult Education’s English Language Learning program.  While parents learn English in one classroom, children receive high-quality preschool in another.  The two programs implement a coordinated curriculum so parents can continue working on early learning concepts with their children at home. Evaluation of the program has shown that participating children were three times more likely than their peers to enter kindergarten fully ready to learn. 137 children attended the program last year.

StoryCycles

StoryCycles helps engage parents in routine daily “book cuddling” with young children to foster healthy brain development, parent-child bonding, and early literacy skills critical for school success. Each week, children take a bag of books home to share stories with their families and then return their bag the following week in exchange for a new bag of books to begin the book-sharing cycle again. In Contra Costa, the program is implemented in more than 100 different locations, including family child care and child care centers and the First 5 Centers.  Last year over 1,500 children and their families participated. The program is run by Tandem, Partners in Early Learning.
