Leaders from Pittsburg and Contra Costa County help break ground at the future site of the East County First 5 Center in Pittsburg
As we celebrate the life and legacy of former Mayor, Councilmember, and City Recreation Supervisor Marilyn “Merl” Craft on October 26, 2026, we reflect on a life defined by service, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the Pittsburg community. Merl’s tireless efforts to uplift children and families in the community left a lasting impression on the many individuals and organizations fortunate enough to work alongside her.
When First 5 Contra Costa relocated its Family Resource Center from Bay Point to Pittsburg, Merl was a strong advocate for the organization’s presence. She spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony, signed the sledgehammer we used to break ground, and welcomed First 5 into the community. She also helped foster warm introductions and build connections with new neighbors. Merl understood the importance of bringing resources and opportunities closer to the families who needed them most.

“Merl’s steadfast commitment to uplifting community needs was demonstrated by her active engagement in local efforts supporting the well-being and education of young children in Pittsburg and neighboring communities,” shared Dr. Ruth Fernandez, First 5 Contra Costa Executive Director. “She showed up when her support, voice, and representation was needed. When we celebrated the groundbreaking of the East County First 5 Center in Pittsburg, Merl made sure to be there, publicly supporting our efforts to welcome families to the new site.”
Lisa R. Johnson, First 5 Contra Costa Grants and Contracts Manager, had the pleasure of knowing Merl through her previous work with the City of Pittsburg and witnessed firsthand her commitment to the community.
“Pittsburg was more than Merl’s home. The community was her family, and she embraced that responsibility with her whole heart,” shared Lisa. “She was someone who showed up, brought people together, and genuinely cared about the well-being of others. Her presence will certainly be missed, but her legacy will live on through the many people, families, and organizations she touched.”
