West County Regional Group

Who are We

The West County Regional Group trained and organized parent volunteer leaders to build power among those underrepresented in public decision-making and to advocate for healthy, safe, and equitable communities for children and families. All West County residents who care about children are welcome to participate.

Policy Advocacy Efforts:

Park Equity and Safety

The West County Regional Group has advocated for increased community access to quality and safe parks. Working with Healthy & Active Before 5 and the City of Richmond, the group assessed 25 parks across Richmond, reviewing aspects like the play structures, safety, cleanliness, ADA and transportation accessibility, the amenities, and how suitable each park was for young children and families. The group’s community research project led to an $8 million investment in Boorman Park. Read their Richmond Park report here.

Street Safety

Together with partners, the West County Regional Group conducted walk audits and advocated for pedestrian improvements which led to the city of San Pablo investing more than $10 million in improvements for San Pablo Avenue and Rumrill Boulevard. The improvements will include protected crosswalks, bike lanes, sidewalks, lighting, and landscaping. The West County Regional Group continues to work with the City of San Pablo on a citywide Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan that prioritizes safe streets in high-traffic, low-income neighborhoods.

In the past, the group has also advocated for stable housing, immigrant and racial justice issues, and more.
