Dr. Sefanit (Sofe) Mekuria received her BS in Human Physiology from Boston University and her MD from Boston University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at Kaiser Oakland and received a Master in Public Health from University of California, Berkeley during her pediatric residency. She also completed a Preventive Medicine Residency through the California Department of Public Health and is board-certified in Preventive Medicine and Pediatrics.
Dr. Mekuria came to Contra Costa in 2016 during her Preventive Medicine Residency and worked throughout the public health department aiding and supporting research and projects throughout the department. Dr. Mekuria continued with Contra Costa Health Services after her preventive medicine residency and has continued as a provider in juvenile hall and supporting improvement efforts there.
Dr. Mekuria has supported the Contra Costa Public Health Communicable Disease program and the Public School-Based clinic programs as a provider and a clinical lead, and is now the Medical Director in Public Health. Dr. Mekuria has also served as one of the Deputy Health Officers and has continued to support COVID-19 response in the county.
