Gareth Ashley

Alternate Commissioner representing District 4

Gareth moved to the Bay Area in 2005 and quickly settled in Concord, having worked all around the world in the architecture and engineering industry. Gareth first got involved in early childhood education as a Parent Trustee of the preschool his two sons attended (St Michael’s in Concord), where he later served as Board Chair. At St. Michael’s, Gareth saw first-hand the benefits of preschool education as his children blossomed and how even simple interventions like the “Raising a Reader” can have a positive impact.

Gareth was appointed to the First 5 Commission in early 2013 to represent District IV. He also sits on the MDUSD Measure C Oversight Committee and is active on industry bodies in the engineering and aviation sectors.

“I have worked on multi-billion dollar design and infrastructure projects all around the world that have touched the lives of millions of people. If you had told me 10 years ago that my most fulfilling work would be in the voluntary sector and for children under five years, I would have called you crazy,” said Gareth.
