Home Visiting

Home visiting is a powerful proven tool to support families. Many home visiting programs provide education, coaching and support to expectant and new parents. These supports foster the critical parent-child bond, and reinforce parents’ own efforts and abilities to give their children the best start possible. High quality home visiting programs are proven to increase families’ economic self-sufficiency, foster healthy child development, promote school readiness, and reduce child maltreatment.

First 5 Contra Costa is working to support the efforts of the home visiting programs in our county, particularly those who serve families most impacted by disparate perinatal health outcomes.  First 5 Contra Costa helps bring home visiting staff working in the county together to learn more about effective strategies and explore ways to collaborate to enhance impact and effectiveness.

First 5 Contra Costa partnered with Prenatal to Five Fiscal Strategies, a national expert in home visiting, to conduct a landscape analysis of home visiting programs operating in Contra Costa County. Prenatal to Five Fiscal Strategies also convened a multi-month learning series with home visitors in Fiscal Year 2024-25 to explore ways for organizations to collaborate on topics such as capacity building for the home visiting workforce, aligning program models to population needs, and coordinating around funding, data, and evaluation efforts.

First 5 Contra Costa also hosts group trainings for home visitors on a variety of topics, such as motivational interviewing or supporting young children with delays or disabilities.
